APON Forms Strategic Alliance with Nigerian Police K-9 Unit to Promote Canine Welfare and Training Excellence
Ibadan, Nigeria – March 8, 2025
In a significant step toward promoting animal welfare and security synergy in Nigeria, the Animal Protection Organization of Nigeria (APON) on March 8, 2025, entered into a strategic alliance with the K-9 Department of the Nigerian Police Force. The landmark event, themed “Workshop on Dog Handling,” was hosted at the Nigerian Police K-9 Unit in Sango, Ibadan.
The workshop was designed to foster collaboration, share knowledge, and enhance best practices in dog management. Attendees explored vital areas such as canine behavior, safety protocols, humane training methods, and effective handling techniques. These discussions aimed to strengthen the capacity of handlers and improve the overall well-being of service dogs.

A diverse group of participants graced the event, including veterinary professionals, animal welfare advocates, and representatives from other non-governmental organizations with a shared mission of animal protection and responsible dog care.
Speaking during the session, APON’s Founder, Amb. Joseph Odika, emphasized the importance of understanding dogs not just as tools for security but as sentient beings deserving of care, respect, and proper treatment. “This partnership marks a new chapter in humane dog management in Nigeria,” he said. “Together, we can ensure that the K-9 units across the country operate under standards that reflect compassion and professionalism.”

The workshop concluded on a promising note with key stakeholders making strong pledges to support the rehabilitation and upgrading of the K-9 unit’s dog shelter—a move that will enhance the living conditions and care standards for the service dogs.
The meeting ended with a closing remark from the Executive Director of APON – Adekunle Olumide Ralphie, letting the attendees know that APON remains committed to championing the cause of animal welfare in Nigeria and sees this collaboration as a pivotal foundation for future partnerships with security agencies and animal-related institutions across the nation.
