APON 2026 Cage-free Campaign

In the month of January 2026, 15th precisely, the Animal Protection Organization of Nigeria, started the year’s work by embarking on a campaign to end the suffering of birds kept in cages, in the popular Eleyele, market in the ancient city of Ibadan, where egg market is considered to have doubled in the last 2 years.

There was a little pause on the campaign between 2024 and 2025, with the intent to measure the outcomes of our previous campaigns.

Outcome:

Our review shows that supply chains and businesses have not made much progress in their promises to adopt Cage-free policies.

On the end of farmers, a substantial number of free range policies have been noticed, and the future for this type of farms to increase is promising, as researchers are developing farm models that look more of a free range and far less of battery cage.

On the end of government policy shift, it’s really looking difficult but this will not stop us from promoting the campaign.

Way forward:

We will intensify our public awareness to keep the public aware of the suffering laying hens are exposed to, and the likelihood of Microbial infestation to humans.

We will keep track of supply chains and hit hard with our campaign targeting this organizations.

Lastly, we will continue to engage with policy leaders of the dire needs to embrace a national cage-free policy.
This looks like a long distance to the finish line, we have started the race already, and there no going back.
